Jon Jones is one of the greatest MMA fighters to have ever walked this planet. Thus, we know almost everything there is to know about him. However, one thing that has been a mystery is his religion.
Although it has never really been confirmed, Jon Jones is not Muslim. For any of those wondering, the huge tattoo which reads ‘Philippians 4:13’ across his chest should have been a dead giveaway. Moreover, Bones has also been heard quoting the Bible on numerous occasions.
For those unaware, the text on Jones’ chest means: “I can do all things through Christ who strengthens me.” As such, it clearly implies that Jon is in fact a devout Christian. Previously, In ‘UFC In the Moment: Jon Jones,’ he explained that there are times when he doubted his religion. However, he has since strengthened his faith and learned to work through his doubts.
Ahead of his first-ever title fight against Mauricio Rua, the episode was shot, highlighting Jones’ life. Notably, Jones stated, “Spirituality is what makes me do the right thing when no one is looking. To know someone is watching you when no one is watching you. I think it is an important thing to have.” Unfortunately, Jones had a sister who passed away, which made him question his devotion to Christianity for a period of time.
Why do Fans think Jon Jones is Muslim?
Although he has been known to be Christian, there was a time when many felt that Jon had converted. Through a series of interviews, Jones showed people how fluent his Arabic was. From simply greeting to having full-blown conversations, fans were impressed with Jon’s bilingualism.
Additionally, there was an interview with Ariel Helwani where Jones was complimented for his beard. At the time, Jones simply replied, “Well I converted, I am now Muslim.” For the most part, it sent fans into a frenzy as they truly began believing that Jon had converted to Islam. However, Jon later revealed that the beard was not a sign of conversion, but rather a friendly beard-growing competition on Twitter.
Yet another instance that kept the belief running was Jones’post fight interview after his victory against Dominick Reyes at UFC 247. When congratulated by Joe Rogan, Jones said, “Oh man, Alhamdulillah. God is so good”. With Jones thanking God, many were convinced that he has indeed converted. Unfortunately, it was simply a Khabib impersonation from Jones, as per some fans.
Thus, with all the evidence carefully analyzed and taken into context, we can safely say that Jones is not a Muslim. Although the instances were very good at throwing some people off, it was not really the case. With so many people urging Jones to convert to Islam, it can always be something that he may consider in the future.
