UFC Louisville set a few records after wrapping up last night with Jared Cannonier vs. Nassouridine Imavov in the main event. The former Middleweight title challenger Jared Cannonier stepped inside the cage on the back of back-to-back wins against an up-and-coming Imavov in the five-round headliner to pay their claim on Dricus du Plessis’ middleweight gold.
Dominick Reyes returned to action against Dustin Jacoby in the co-main event with many exciting match-ups across the undercard. Let’s take a look at the results.
UFC Louisville: Jared Cannonier suffers stoppage loss in the main event
Jared “Killa Gorilla” Cannonier suffered the first stoppage loss of his UFC career in over 6+ years against Nassouridine Imavov after referee Jason Herzog stopped the fight in the fourth round after a lead right hand rocked Cannonier and sent him wobbling on his feet.
Cannonier struggled to maintain balance and ran around the Octagon, trying to avoid Imavov’s punches and knees, for a good twenty seconds until the referee Jason Herzog stopped the fight to an immediate retaliation from Cannonier.
The stoppage loss did not sit well with the UFC fans either, who took to social media to express their frustration over the decision. Calling it one of the worst stoppages in the UFC’s history, fans were not too pleased with Jason Herzog’s decision not to allow Cannonier more time to recover.
However, a certain section of the fans felt it was only a matter of time before Imavov would have finished the fight, however, Cannonier deserved to go out on his shield in an important match-up and at this time in his UFC career. The American fighter is 40-year-old, and is possibly fighting the last few fights of his MMA career and is on his one last run for the gold.
Prior to the fourth round stoppage, it was a back and forth fight between the headliners, who had their fair share of moments in each round. While Cannonier had trouble landing his punches, he was able to land those kicks and take advantage of Imavov near the fence, the latter did really well landing big shots and his conditioning proved to be a huge factor against a heavy hitter like Cannonier.
Meanwhile, in the co-main event, Dominick Reyes picked up his first UFC win ever since losing to Jon Jones back February 2020. Coincidentally, Reyes was the the last fighter to finish Jared Cannonier before tonight. He earned a first round stoppage win over the Killa Gorilla back in May 2018.
Dominick Reyes earns his first UFC victory after more than four years
Dominick Reyes hasn’t had a UFC career one would have hoped after his row of finishes more than four years ago which led him to a title fight against Jon Jones back in 2018. Since then, the former two-time light-heavyweight title challenger has failed to secure a victory, dropping four straight losses inside the cage.
However, all that changed at UFC Lousiville, as Dominick Reyes earned a scintillating stoppage win in the very first round against Dustin Jacoby, and that too with a lethal knee to jump back to the winning column. A visibly emotional and excited Reyes jumped the cage and celebrated with the fans much to the happiness of each and every MMA fan present inside the arena.
