Both the fighters were scheduled to take on each other on UFC Fight Island 6 on December 19. However, both the fighters got tested positive for the dreaded coronavirus.
The case was much severe for Leon Edwards who reportedly lost a lot of weight due to the virus. However, wasting no time, both the fighters agreed to reschedule the fight to January 20 on Fight Island. However, earlier today, Chimaev pulled out of the bout due to undisclosed reasons.

Leon Edwards has not fought since June 2019, where he picked up a dominant unanimous decision win over former lightweight champion Rafael dos Anjos. At one point, he was even removed from the UFC welterweight rankings. It has been one and a half years since Edwards was last seen inside the Octagon. Needless to say, the British fighter will look to seal his championship opportunity, and who better than Jorge Masvidal.
Why Leon Edwards vs Jorge Masvidal is huge for UFC
Jorge Masvidal and Leon Edwards share a genuine beef with each other. Who can forget the backstage altercation between both the fighters when Masvidal served the “three-piece and a soda” to Leon Edwards.
The beef is real and it’s a match-up that makes complete sense. Jorge Masvidal is currently ranked #4 in the UFC’s welterweight rankings. Here’s the real reason why Masvidal lost his cool on Edwards backstage.
With Khamzat Chimaev out of the picture and Jorge Masvidal without an opponent to his name, it makes sense for “Gamebred” to take the fight against Leon Edwards. Additionally, a win over Edwards can guarantee a title shot once again. Only time will tell what lies ahead for both Leon Edwards and Jorge Masvidal. However, if that match-up does capitalize, it will go down as one of the biggest fights in the history of UFC.
