Ian Garry, the new prospect from Ireland will make his Ultimate Fighting Championship debut this weekend and will like to follow the footsteps of his idol Conor McGregor.
In September, UFC announced that Garry will make his debut against Jordan Williams at UFC 268 on November 6 at Madison Square Garden. The Irishman got the contract for UFC after he became the Welterweight Champion in the London-based MMA promotion Cage Warriors Fighting Championship.
Ian Garry’s Early life:
Garry was born in Dublin, Ireland, and was raised by her mother who worked very hard for his schooling and training as his father was sick. Hence, Garry got into sports quite early and at the age of four, he started playing Irish traditional sports like Gaelic football, and Hurling. As a youngster, Garry’s first encounter with combat sports was boxing. He joined a boxing gym at the age of 10 and instantly got hooked on it.
Ian Garry’s Introduction to MMA:
For Garry, the idea of knocking someone out without getting hit was great, and wanted to continue his career in boxing. But, things changed when he first saw “The Notorious” becoming a UFC superstar and bringing UFC to Ireland. Mcgregor’s dominance in UFC made MMA a huge hit in Ireland and Garry was amazed by it. Mcgregor‘s influence was so much that Garry decided to become an MMA fighter.
It wasn’t easy for the young aspirant to persuade his mother to allow him to become an MMA fighter. Eventually, after some efforts, Garry’s mother was ready but ‘ The Future ‘ had a hard path ahead of him to achieve what he wanted. In college, Garry joined a gym for MMA training and also worked as a full-time window cleaner. He made sure to work in the morning so that he could focus on training at night.
Ian Garry Professional career & Personal Life:
Ian Garry’s hard work paid off when he got selected to fight in Cage Warriors. Garry made his professional debut at CW 101 and dropped his opponent James Sheehan only in 30 seconds. Garry continued his dominance throughout his run in the promotion. During that time, Garry started a romantic relationship with T.V presenter Layla Anna-Lee who later became his manager.
As everything was going smooth, just 10 days before Garry’s Championship fight against Jack Grant his team decided to abandon him. However, this upset didn’t affect Garry’s determination as he went alone to fight and win the championship belt.
Signing With UFC and Joining Sanford MMA:
Just 24 hours after becoming the CW Welterweight Champion, UFC signed Garry. This was the opportunity that ‘The Future‘ was eagerly waiting for and he was all set to pounce on it. After coming to the States, Garry decided to join Sanford MMA gym in Florida to train. Sanford head coach Henri Hooft was impressed by his determination and skills and was ready to help him. For Garry, training with elite MMA fighters like Gilbert Burns and Michael Chandler was a dream come true. Hence, he is all set to take on his future opportunities inside the octagon.
Ian Garry is on the way to becoming the next Conor McGregor:
Garry(7-0) is scheduled to make his UFC debut against Jordan Williams at UFC 268 at Madison square garden. In an interview with UFC, Garry revealed that becoming the next Conor McGregor is not easy. But, he surely aspires to be like him one day. “ Conor became the double champ in Madison Square Garden and the fact that I get to make my debut in the same place is massive for me,” said Garry. The 23-year-old Irish fighter has great potential and has all the attributes to become the division champion.
