UFC 271 is just 3 days away and the excitement for the event has reached a fever pitch. With the main event such as Israel Adesanya vs Robert Whittaker, the event will be an entertaining one for sure. However, that is not the only middleweight fight on the main card. No. 3 ranked Jared Cannonier will fight the 4th ranked Derek Brunson on the card as well.
Ahead of the bout, Jared Cannonier sent a warning to his opponent, as well as the entire 185 lbs division. During an interview with The Schmo, the 37-year old addressed the audience and took shots at Derek Brunson’s nickname. He will also be available as a backup in case either fighter in the main event is unable to compete.
He said, “Hi, get ready. I’m about to bust open this UFC middleweight division wide open as soon as I as I turn ‘Blonde Brunson’ into ‘Blood Brunson’. ‘Cause I’m gonna bloody him up, I’m gonna batter him up. ‘Ground Beef Brunson’, whatever the h**l you call him, I’m gonna beat him up.”

Cannonier also seems confident that he will get a title shot after this Saturday’s event. He added, “Then I’m gonna move up to my title. And I’m probably gonna do the same thing to each and every person after that.”
Will Jared Cannonier fight for the title next?
Jared Cannonier made his UFC middleweight division in 2018. He fought at Heavyweight and Light-Heavyweight before moving down. ‘The Kill Gorilla’ is one of the only fighters to win in three different divisions in the UFC. The list includes Conor McGregor as well. Since his move to the division, Cannonier has had 4 wins out of his 5 fights. The only bump in the road came against the other half of this Saturday’s main event, Robert Whittaker.
However, a win more Brunson may not be enough for the Texan fighter to secure a title fight. Sean Strickland had a big victory over Jack Hermansson over the weekend. Hence, a fight between Jared and Sean may decide the next challenger for the winner between Adesanya and Whittaker.
