Conor McGregor is once again in the headlines following the release of his much-anticipated documentary. As such, “McGregor Forever” brought us a behind-the-scenes of Conor’s life. However, one of the most notable things here was Coach Kavanagh’s thoughts going into the Khabib fight.
For those unaware, Conor made his return to MMA after a two-year break to face Khabib Nurmagomedov in 2018. As such, it soon became one of the biggest rivalries in UFC history, since there was a lot of bad blood between the two. Understandably, with the stakes involved, there was a lot of hate and anger involved.
Ahead of the Notorious One‘s fight against Khabib, Coach Kavanagh felt as though Khabib was one of the toughest fighters ever. “He has that sort of very aggressive submission game”. Further, he adds, “It’s hard to beat someone who is never gonna stop trying that tactic, just keep smashing and smashing until he’s successful with it”.
On the night, The Eagle did exactly the same, submitting Conor with a rear naked choke in Round 4. Naturally, the loss did not go down well with Conor who has sworn to exact revenge since that day. Whilst a fight against Khabib may not be possible, Conor and Coach Kavanagh have worked tirelessly to figure out a game plan against that style.
Conor McGregor reveals success behind ‘new system’
Previously, it was announced that McGregor will be making his return to the UFC this year. Following a coaching stint opposite Michael Chandler at TUF 31, Conor would take on Chandler inside the Octagon. The news was met with a lot of hype and excitement with fans happy to see McGregor back after his leg-break.
Following the filming of TUF 31, Conor inadvertently gave a spoiler for the show during a Twitter tirade. Moreover, he went on to spoil it even further during his spat with Khabib’s manager, Ali Abdelaziz. Whilst Conor is known for having back and forth on Twitter, this one was particularly interesting.
In a now-deleted tweet, Conor wrote, “Hey, s**t stain on the game, I’m talking as of now it is beginning to bare fruit. We beat their system of fighting on Tuf”. Further, he added, “It’s locked down. It’s no wonder s**t pants (Khabib) scurried. There’s no competing now. The head of the style is too fat a b*tch and afraid to compete again. So we win. You can’t compete with us. Watch and witness you rat b**tard.”
Whilst he revealed that their new system was successful against the Dagestani wrestling type, there was no real information as to what it really was. However, following Alexander Volkanovski’s close loss to Islam Makhachev, Conor gave a hint as to what it may be. Thus, we will have to wait and see how this new “system” plays out once TUF 31 starts airing, on May 30.
