Conor McGregor returns to the lightweight division to face the former interim champion, Dustin Poirier, at UFC 257. After beating Donald Cerrone in a 40 seconds outing at welterweight division Conor is set to begin his journey to the lightweight throne again.
However, winning the third title in UFC must be a goal Conor would like to achieve. There were a lot of speculations of him fighting Jorge Masvidal or Kamaru Usman in 2020. However, Conor is back at lightweight again. And he intends to tear through the division as he did when he made his debut in UFC as a featherweight.
In a recent episode of the podcast, Weighing in, Conor reveals his plans for the welterweight and lightweight divisions. Conor stated:
“I hope we continue in 2021 as we were supposed to continue 202. Obviously, there were a lot of factors in the 2020 situation. There are certainly more opportunities now, there are many lightweight contenders. I am very excited to back down at the weight. For me a while ago, it was almost like I don’t want to go down to the lightweight division. It’s a lot of dedication and a lot of commitment. I have done it for my team, my fans. I would love to put on a good stint in the lightweight division, similar to what I done in the featherweight division. I have not really had a good crack at the lightweight division. I came to the UFC as a 145ers. I done what I done there. I have done great things there. Then I went for the lofty goals to become the dual weight champion. Then obviously the Floyd fight, the 170 run, I have not had a good stint back to back at 155 ponds. Now I feel this is the perfect opportunity to do so.”
Conor McGregor is aiming for the UFC lightweight title
For the time being, lightweight is the ideal division for Conor McGregor. Though he can have a good run at the welterweight division he will always have a huge weight disadvantage against the welterweights such as Colby Covington, Kamaru Usman or Jorge Masvidal.
If Conor secures a victory over Dustin Poirier at UFC 257 then it’s certain that UFC will push for a rematch between Conor McGregor and Khabib Nurmagomedov with the UFC title on the line. If that fight does not come to fruition then there are some exciting matchups for Conor in the lightweight division.
