Conor McGregor can not seem to catch a break from legal troubles. A few weeks ago, reports came out that his former best friend Artem Lobov sued him over a dispute regarding the inception of the whiskey brand “Proper 12.” However, it looks like McGregor will soon have a second lawsuit on his hands, thanks to Lobov.
A report from Irish Independent revealed that Artem Lobov recently filed an affidavit with the Commercial Court. In it, he alleged that Conor McGregor’s social media post in response to the lawsuit was with the intention of defamation. Fans may recall, Conor took to his Twitter account after the news of the initial lawsuit and called Artem “a rat.”
The 36-year-old also alleged that Conor’s father Tony McGregor also harassed him on Instagram. Although Lobov initially filed the affidavit in the Commercial Court, Justice Denis McDonald did not accept the motion on his court, citing a lack of resources. The judge also added “a significant lapse of time” as another reason for not listing the case.
But, Lobov’s solicitor Dermot McNamara revealed the case will continue in the High Court chancery list.
Why did Artem Lobov sue Conor McGregor?
As fans know, the whiskey brand “Proper 12” is synonymous with Conor McGregor. Thanks to the former UFC double champ and tireless marketing, Conor McGregor made the brand a huge success. The company was insanely popular and team McGregor cashed in on it. The Notorious One and his two associates, Audie Attar and Ken Austin sold their share for a whopping $600m.
The report adds, after the sale to Proximo Spirits, the 34-year-old apparently made $130 million. But, Artem Lobov claimed that “Proper 12” was his idea, hence he should get 5% of the money from the sale. Lobov also claimed that McGregor guaranteed that the retired Russian fighter would receive 5%. Allegedly Conor backtracked on his promise later.
During the application of Lobov’s affidavit, Conor’s solicitor Michael Staines SC and counsel Remy Farell SC were present in the courtroom. They apparently opposed Artem’s claims and cited that the motion was filed after a “considerable delay.” Not only that, but they also brought up a 2019 interview where Lobov added, “I swear on my child’s life I will not take a cent out of the whiskey deal”.
Conor recently challenged Artem Lobov to a one-on-one fight at the SBG Ireland concorde to settle the case. Needless to say, not much came of it. So it remains to be seen how the case develops in the coming days.
