The fight business works in peculiar ways sometimes. Often the fighters do not get enough credit for the impressive performance they have put on throughout the years. When Conor McGregor was asked about the most underrated fighter in UFC history, the former champion had an interesting pick.
McGregor believes Tony Ferguson is the most underrated fighter in the UFC at the moment. McGregor replied to fans’ question earlier and stated:
“Tony Ferguson. It chops and changes daily however in this hollow forgetful business of recency.”
Tony Ferguson was on a 13 fight win streak before his loss to Justin Gaethje at FUC 249. He was the only fighter in the division who was believed to have the skillsets to beat Khabib Nurmagomedov. However, the loss at UFC 249 derailed Ferguson’s winning streak.
Though the fans still want to see the fight between Khabib and Tony, there is a strong possibility that this fight is never going to happen. Nevertheless, Tony Ferguson is yet to capture the undisputed gold at the lightweight division. And winning the UFC title will just make his legacy look way better than what it is now.
Conor McGregor might face Tony Ferguson in the near future
With Khabib Nurmagomedov potentially out of action for the next few months, there are some fun matchups to make in order to crown the number one contender. And Conor McGregor is certainly in the race to get a title shot against the unbeaten phenom, Khabib Nurmagomedov.
Conor McGregor takes on the former interim champion, Dustin Poirier on his much anticipated UFC return. However, former Bellator champion, Michael Chandler, former interim champions, Tony Ferguson and Justin Gaethje will also be looking to make a statement in their next fight.
If Tony Ferguson wins his next fight in a dominant fashion then he will be a strong contender for the title as well. With Khabib showing no interest in fighting the current lightweight contenders, Conor and Tony might finally fight each other.
Though Ferguson has been calling McGregor out for years now this fight has not come to fruition yet. A lot would depend on the next move of the lightweight champion. If he decides to go for the legacy fight with GSP then Conor and Ferguson might end up fighting for the title.
