UFC women’s flyweight champion, Valentina Shevchenko takes on Jennifer Maia in the co-main event of UFC 256. However, it’s hard for the fans to get excited about this fight.
Valentina Shevchenko is certainly one of the greatest women mixed martial artists of all time. And thanks to her sheer dominance in the UFC flyweight division the hype behind a flyweight title fight has decreased over time.
There are only a few fighters who have the skillsets to beat Valentina Shevchenko. And the UFC female GOAT, Amanda Nunes is certainly one of them. Though these two have already fought on two occasions fans are still intrigued to see a trilogy fight because Shevchenko might just be the only fighter who can beat Nunes inside the octagon.
In a recent interview with TMZ, Dana White opened up about a possible trilogy between the two. White stated:
“Sure. Those two keep cleaning out divisions. It just makes sense to see those two fight again.”
Dana White has huge plans for Valentina Shevchenko
That’s not the only fight UFC is aiming for Valentina Shevchenko. As per Dana White, UFC is eyeing a super fight between Zhang Weili and Valentina Shevchenko. Zhang Weili defended her title against Joanna Jedrzejczyk in a 5 round war in her last fight.
Though she has a number of worthy opponents in the strawweight division a clash with Shevchenko will certainly intrigue her and the fight fans. Talking about a potential fight between Zhang Weili and Valentina Shevchenko, White stated:
“I don’t know (what’s next). There’s talk about her and Weili Zhang if Weili wins her next fight (against Rose Namajunas). I don’t know,”.
Both Shevchenko and Zhang Weili have shown interest in fighting each other before. And considering that there are not many exciting fights for Shevchenko available in the division UFC might book this fight in the near future.
Shevchenko will certainly be the favorite against Zhang Weili. Both are phenomenal strikers and can defend themselves on the ground as well. However, Shevchenko has the edge in the striking and she is more experienced when it comes to high-profile fights. Nevertheless, a fight between the two might be the only way to bring some excitement to the UFC women’s flyweight division.
