Kamaru Usman

The main event between Kamaru Usman and Gilbert Burns has been cancelled. The number one contender, Gilbert Burns had to withdraw from the fight because he tested positive for COVID-19.

Now as per sources UFC is leaning towards postponing the fight between Kamaru Usman and Gilbert Burns. However, it seems UFC has some huge alternatives for the main event of UFC 251. And it can be guaranteed that the fans are going to love these alternatives.

After the welterweight title fight fell apart, former interim champion, Colby Covington immediately showed interest to fight for the title. Colby Covington has already fought Kamaru Usman back in December 2019 at UFC 245. The fight was one of the greatest title fights in welterweight history. However, the outcome did not go in Covington’s way.

Ever since then Covington has been rallying for another title shot against Kamaru Usman. And it seems the perfect opportunity for him to get the long-awaited rematch with the Nigerian Nightmare. Colby Covington posted:

“You know who they’re gonna call Marty and it ain’t the Ghostbusters Junior! “

Jorge Masvidal makes his intention clear to fight Kamaru Usman

Colby Covington is not the only one who is interested to fight Kamaru Usman at UFC 251. Jorge Masvidal, who was supposed to fight Kamaru Usman for the title initially, also reacted to the whole situation. And it seems Masvidal is ready to step in if the price is right. Earlier Masvidal posted:

Jorge Masvidal was the number one contender before he had a nasty negotiation with UFC regarding the title fight. After that Gilbert Burns had a dominant win over Tyron Woodley, which became a solution for UFC to the Masvidal situation.

As Masvidal was not willing to fight for lesser money, UFC declared Gilbert Burns as the number one contender and booked the fight for the main event of UFC 251.

UFC 251 is a monumental card for UFC if you consider the hype surrounding it. It will be the first PPV on the fight island and it looked promising with three huge title fights in it. However, the cancellation of the main event can disappoint the fans.

Fortunately, UFC does have some lucrative options ahead of UFC 251. It would be intriguing to see whether UFC approaches Jorge Masvidal to accept the fight against Kamaru Usman or UFC grants Colby Covington the rematch that he deserves.
