“He Lost Twice to the Champ”- Dustin Poirier Gives Verdict on a Potential Fight With Colby Covington at Welterweight

Colby Covington and Dustin Poirier

Dustin Poirier was recently at UFC Fight Night 203, supporting his fellow fighter A.J. Fletcher. After the event, the former Lightweight championship contender was asked about his response towards the Colby Covington call-out.

Poirier revealed that he found the call-out very cute and fair as it is a huge PPV and fans want that too. Poirier explained that it makes sense for Covington to call out his name as he currently is not after the welterweight championship bout.

He failed to win the belt twice against Kamaru Usman and now needs to stack up some wins to get the opportunity again. But Poirier suggested that if Covington wants the title shot against Usman he should fight other welterweights in the division not him.

“I mean it’s cute. Yeah, it’s all good, It is what it is. People want big fights, that’s a big fight. He wants a big fight you know, obviously, he’s not in line for the title fight. He lost twice to the champ so he probably needs a few more wins. But I would think you know if you want to get back to that strap, you gotta fight welterweight contenders,” said Poirier to ESPN MMA.

Poirier is currently not sure about himself whether he will stay at lightweight or move up to the welterweight division. In this scenario, it’s useless for Covington to challenge him in order to get closer to the belt. But if the whole fight is for the money involved in it, then Covington is going on the right track.

Dustin Poirier is interested in fighting Nate Diaz

The fight between Poirier and Diaz has been on the table for a long time but there are no leads regarding the confirmation. It all started when both the fighters mutually agreed to fight against each other. For the ‘Diamond’ it’s a fight that he is definitely interested in. He has been watching the Diaz brothers for a long time now. So, it will be challenging and fun for him to take on the younger brother.

Moreover, moving up a weight class and fighting the no 1 contender is silly. So, fighting Nate might benefit Poirier from that angle as well. Dustin will get paid well and fight a much easier opponent than Colby.

For the fans, it’s the fight that everyone wants and is excited to see. Hardcore Diaz fans have been waiting for his return for a long time. If the fight takes place this summer, it will be one of the biggest pay-per-view events of the year.
