Montserrat “Conejo” Ruiz delivers an epic performance on short notice in her UFC debut against Cheyanne Buys in a featured fight at the main card of UFC Vegas 22. The Mexican-born strawweight showcased a strong grappling game to take Cheyanne Buys down repeatedly over three rounds to earn a hard-fought unanimous decision victory.
The scorecards read 29-28, 29-28, and 29-27 as Ruiz picks up her first win in the UFC while spoiling Buys‘ debut after she gained a lot of attention following her appearance on Dana White’s Contender Series in 2020.
However, things got a little hairy after Buys and Conejo had a few punches thrown but when the final horn was blown, it was Conejo who seemed to taunt her opponent. Cheyanne didn’t take this well and she pushed her opponent and both stars had to be celebrated. The pair being separated wasn’t enough.
Conejo kept trash talking and even showed her rival the middle finger too. This was done several times and there seemed to be a lot of bad blood brewing between them.

But it cannot be denied the fact that Montserrat impressed on her UFC debut and moved to 10-1 in her career. She did promise a war coming in. That was accurate. Out of the gate, the pair traded some serious punches, each looking to establish dominance early. When they went to the ground, it was Ruiz, a.k.a. “Conejo,” moving to side control, and locking on a headlock.
Buys scrambled and tried to pull free, but to no avail. Ruiz’s background as a wrestler was giving her an edge on the ground as she controlled buys for more than nine minutes on the ground. Ruiz managed to trap an arm, though she wasn’t able to come close to finishing her opponent, but she certainly enjoyed the win and celebrated a lot by dancing with her team.
It is now certain that the Mexican has begun her career with a bang but whatever happened post-fight gave her much criticism from the fans, which could prove to be vital moving forward in her career.
