Ian Garry has been making a name for himself in the UFC’s welterweight division. Be it his confidence or brash personality, the Irishman is an entertaining character. However, Garry also gives a lot of importance to his fans as well.
Ahead of UFC 292, Ian revealed that he heard one of Israel Adesanya’s ‘Goku spirit’ references from Dragon Ball. Curious to find out what it was, Garry realized that it was about harnessing energy from people and giving it back. As such, ahead of his fight with Neil Magny, Garry thought to give back to the fans by doing an open workout at an Irish pub in Boston.
For the most part, ‘The Future’ had a great reception at the bar with plenty of people cheering him on. With that said, he almost ran into trouble for his actions. “The policeman on shift came up to us beforehand. He said to my team when they were checking the barrow.” According to Garry, the officer warned him not to step outside the pub. “He said, ‘If he steps outside on the streets and hits pads, I’m gonna arrest him and put them in jail overnight because of a riot law.’”
Initially, Machado Garry thought that it would be ‘gold media’ to get arrested just before the fight. Unfortunately, the Irishman was not a local, meaning that any altercation would put his visa at risk. Despite that, Garry promised that he will continue to push the boundaries of the law and try to do something bigger and better before each of his fights.
What is next for Ian Garry after UFC 292?
For the most part, Ian had a dominant showing on Saturday night at the TD Garden in Boston. Taking on Neil Magny, it was expected that Garry would likely win the fight. However, on the night, the 25-year-old exceeded expectations by putting on an absolute clinic on the veteran Magny.
Coming into the fight, there was already some bad blood behind the two. As it turns out, Ian did not take to Magny’s media day comments lightly and wanted to ‘punish’ him for it. On the night, Garry opened the fight, chopping away at Magny with thundering leg kicks, downing his opponent twice within the opening 30 seconds of the fight. In the one-sided affair that continued, Magny chose to shut up shop and go into ‘survival mode’ for the rest of the fight.
After the fight, the ecstatic Irishman revealed that he wanted to prove himself as the best striker in the welterweight division. As such, Garry issued a callout to Stephen ‘Wonderboy’ Thompson, who is one of the best strikers in the UFC right now. However, seeing that he is now 40 years old, Wonderboy would prefer fights that give him a chance to make a run for the title. According to sources, Thompson has already rejected the opportunity to fight Ian Garry.
As for his future, Ian stated that the top of the division is filled with wrestlers and grapplers. Thus, he plans to go back to Brazil and polish out his wrestling and jiu-jitsu before he can make a run for the title. Despite his hype, Garry is still very new to the game and has a lot of experience to gain. However, the sky is the limit for the Irish prospect, making it interesting to see how things unfold in the future.
