The 37 years old UFC veteran, Derek Brunson secured yet another impressive win in the main event of UFC vegas 36. And this is the biggest win of his current 5 fight winning streak in the middleweight division.
Derek Brunson dominated Darren Till on the ground and secured a submission win the round 3. Going into the fight Till was a big favorite to come out victorious but it seemed Brunson has just had the perfect game plan for the Gorilla.
He was able to secure takedowns against Darren Till in every round and did a lot of damage on the ground. In the post-fight interview, talking about his takedowns against Till, Brunson stated:
“Well, ask anybody in the division. it’s about taking my time, really setting it up. I was not out here lunging for takedowns. I was kind of setting my takedowns up. It’s just about maturing and focusing on my wrestling in the camps on how to make it effortless.”
Derek Brunson also said that Darren Till can make a comeback despite losing 4 out of his last 5 fights. It must be noted that Brunson has had a lot of ups and downs in the middleweight division. However, he was able to make the adjustments and get on a 5 fight winning streak that can give him an opportunity to fight for the UFC title for the first time in his career.
Derek Brunson says Darren Till should consider moving down to welterweight
Derek Brunson also suggested that Darren Till should also consider moving back to the welterweight division.
“Absolutely, I feel bad for Till. I actually like the guy. He is like a bad a** kid saying edgy things. but, overall he is a good person. he is really funny. I think the guy can pull it together. He is really explosive, really good on the feet, he has really good faints, very confident, it’s just the small thing he needs to adjust. Even maybe thinking about 170 or maybe fine-tuning some of the wrestling thing or some of the defenses, because if he can keep it on the feet he can do a lot better.”
After two losses in the welterweight division, Darren Till made a successful middleweight debut against Kelvin gastelum. Since then he has lost Whittaker and Brunson in his last two fights. He is out of the title contention in the middleweight division and will need to build an impressive winning streak in order to earn an opportunity to fight for the title again.
However, if he goes down to welterweight and picks up a couple of wins then he might have an easier path to the title at 170 compared to the middleweight division.
