Jon Jones is definitely one of the best fighters in MMA history. From participating in 15 UFC title fights to remaining unbeaten for nearly 14 years, Jones’ accomplishments will be hard to surpass for any active fighter. But one of the arguments that go against him in the GOAT debate, is the fact that he does not have titles in two separate divisions.
Hence, Jon is coming back to change it as he will fight Ciryl Gane at UFC 285 for the heavyweight title. However, there is another astricts on his GOAT status, which is his problems with PEDs. He tested positive for PEDs twice in his career which resulted in 27 months in total. His first incident was ahead of UFC 200 in 2016 (tested positive for clomiphene and letrozole). After serving a year of suspension, Jones came back at UFC 214.

However, Jon immediately popped for having turinabol steroid in his system. It resulted in an initial 4-year ban, which was later cut short to 15 months. Other than that, Jon also had cocaine in one of his samples in 2014, which handed him a $25,000 fine. But not much came of it as it was an out-of-competition drug test. However, if Chael Sonnen is to be believed, Jon had much more than cocaine in his blood.
Chael Sonnen reveals a fascinating story about his fight against Jon Jones at UFC 159
Chael Sonner recently appeared on “The MMA Hour” and had a great interview with Ariel Helwani. The two have a long history and they always have entertaining conversations. Hence fans were expecting some interesting stories and the podcast delivered. In honor of Jon Jones coming back at UFC 285, the two were discussing stories about Jonny Bones.
During a portion of the segment, Chael Sonnen brought up their fight at UFC 159 in 2013. Chael, who has since tested positive for PEDs, was very candid about his PED use ahead of his bout against Jon Jones. However, Chael added that Jon was much stronger than him despite the PED use. According to The Bad Guy, he knows the reason behind Jon’s strength and also gave reasons for his claims.
He added, “No, heavens no. Oh my god, oh my god. Oh, Ariel, we know our own, yes. I could tell very easily… Sure, it would be the body, it would start with your deltoid, go to your nipples, and then the upper three abs are the three big tells. But yes of course.
“I had more juice than Tropicana and he pushed me around like a mac truck. As soon as we locked up with each other, as he is pushing me backwards, before he could come up with this big spinning elbow, I remember thinking, ‘I know your secret, cause I got the same one.'”
However, there are questions regarding the theory. Helwani even asked how that was possible with the fighters being drug tested. But Sonnen had an answer for it too. He revealed that USADA tests did not exist in the UFC in 2013 and the commission-approved drug tests were pre-scheduled. Hence, the former UFC title contender claimed that fighters knew how to escape drug testing.
But Chael’s story is about 10 years old and the inclusion of USADA has certainly weeded out a lot of loopholes in drug testing. From unplanned visits to rigid testing procedures, UFC fighters do not have many ways to cheat the system anymore.

However, Chael’s claims are fascinating even though there are no official reports to prove them. But Jones recently revealed that there was no question over his career accomplishments following some USADA rule changes. So what is your take on the matter? Let us know in the comments down below.
