Dustin Poirier will not fight Colby Covington inside the UFC octagon. The two fighters have been barking at each other ever since their time together in the American Top Team (ATT) gym. Although they were teammates, Dustin and Colby never got along with one another.
Colby Covington has been very open about his intentions to fight ‘El Diamante’. During various interviews, Covington has accused Poirier of weighing more than him and insisted that a fight between them is inevitable. He has also made some disparaging comments against Poirier’s family.
Hence, fans are anxiously waiting to see whether Dustin Poirier and Colby Covington fight each other or not. However, that won’t happen according to the former UFC lightweight interim champion. During a media scrum for UFC 271, Poirier stated that the fight will not happen inside an octagon.
Although Dustin Poirier earlier expressed his wish to move up to welterweight, he will fight Colby for pleasure and not money. The Louisiana native wants Covington on the streets rather than inside a cage. He added,

“I’ll never fight Colby in an octagon where there’s finances on the line. If I fight Colby, we’re both going to jail. I’m going to jail. You will never see me fight Colby Covington in the UFC.”
What is next for Dustin Poirier?
Dustin Poirier last fought at the very last Pay Per View (PPV) event of last year. Although he did not win the championship against Charles Oliveira, Poirier made a strong account of himself in the first round of the fight. The 32-year old is still one of the most popular and elite fighters in the division. Hence, fans have wondered what is next for him?
Nate Diaz: “I would like to fight Dustin Poirier. Like now. If there’s any mix-up it’s him, and them, and the game. What’s up Dana White? Let’s get this retirement fight cracking so I can get out of this fight game. I’m done with it.”https://t.co/eOp36yw5Eo

His latest comments have ruled out a fight against Colby Covington for sure. But another welterweight bout is certainly on the cards for him. Earlier today, Nate Diaz called him out. He wants Poirier to be the final fight of his MMA career. If the fight happens, under those circumstances, it will be of the biggest UFC events ever. Although the fight was close to being made earlier this year, it may materialize in the coming days.
