UFC welterweight division finally has a title fight scheduled now. Kamaru Usman defends his title against Jorge Masvidal in a rematch at UFC 261. However, that leaves the former interim champion, Colby Covington, without an opponent for the time being.
Since his loss to Kamaru Usman at UFC 245, Colby Covington has stepped into the octagon once. He took on the former champion, Tyron Woodley, and won the fight in spectacular fashion. Though Woodley was coming off two losses against Usman and Burns, Covington’s victory was more impressive as he finished Tyron Woodley.
A rematch between Usman and Covington would have made more sense instead of Usman vs Masvidal rematch. However, Kamaru Usman believed that Covington had to win one more fight before he gets his second chance at the undisputed title.
Colby Covington responded to Usman’s comments in a recent interview with Submission Radio and said:
“The last time I checked, Marty Fake Newsman is not the matchmaker, he is not the Dana White. He is not the UFC. He does not decide that. I already came back and finished the guy that he could not finish and Tyron Woodley. Everybody was giving the GOAT talk on Tyron Woodley when he was on his reign. Everybody was saying that he was the best thing and no one has ever finished Tyron Woodley in the UFC octagon. I am the only one to finish him. I came back, I knocked out, and finished Tyron Woodley.”
Who should Colby Covington fight next?
Covington is the only fighter in the division who came very close to beat Kamaru Usman since he has been on a reign of terror. So it does make sense if he waits to fight the winner of Jorge Masvidal vs Kamaru Usman rematch.
However, Leon Edwards is also waiting for his shot at the title as well. There are other contenders such as Stephen Thompson and Gilbert Burns waiting in the queue to prove their worth in the division. So it won’t be surprising to see UFC booking a fight between Colby Covington and Leon Edwards for the number one title contender spot.
Leon Edwards has been calling out Covington for quite a while. He even said that a fight against Covington makes the most sense after his fight against Belal Muhammad. However, whether Covington would accept the fight against Edwards is still uncertain.
