UFC 257 marked Dustin Poirier squaring off against Conor McGregor and making it even with him. After such a great rematch between 2 of the best fighters in this generation, a third fight has become mandatory to settle the dispute once and for all. Also, when it comes to finances there couldn’t be a better one than this- 2 stalwarts going toe-to-toe to decide who’s the better man. After Poirier knocked out McGregor in UFC 257, they crossed paths backstage where Notorious was eager to have a rematch. Even Dustin seemed to like the idea.
Khabib’s return seems to be unlikely. So, now Poirier and McGregor are most deserving to headline the 155lb division post-Khabib era. Since Diamond’s next fight could very well be a title shot, their trilogy battle could mark Poirier’s title defense against McGregor if he manages to get crowned.
Why does a trilogy fight between Dustin Poirier and Conor McGregor makes so much sense?

After losing the first fight to knockout against McGregor, Poirier again entered the octagon as an underdog. But, he successfully managed to turn the odds by KOing the Irishman in the second round. This bout showed The Diamond’s tremendous improvement during all these years as he became the only man to KO McGregor. The aftermath of the bout has put both fighters in a position to face each other for one more time.
Trilogy fight ensures huge moolah for both Poirier and McGregor
The best example to prove this point is the trilogy between Stipe Miocic and Daniel Cormier. During their first fight, Miocic suffered a first-round knockout at the hands of Cormier. This fight gave Cormier the heavyweight crown. In their next meeting which was DC’s first title defense, Stipe once again managed to claim what was once his- the heavyweight belt.
This fight ended with a 4th round TKO. Before their trilogy, they already had created such hype all thanks to their dominance inside the octagon and their even records against each other. By virtue of this, UFC 252 still managed to sell 500,000 PPVs during the COVID-19 pandemic.
Currently, Notorious and Diamond are in the same position. The legacy they have built throughout their respective careers will surely make the trilogy between them a legendary one. Let’s know in the comments who do you think will win a trilogy between Conor McGregor and Dustin Poirier.
