Justin Gaethje put on a complete blockbuster of a performance during his fight against Dustin Poirier. The Highlight made sure that he avenged his prior loss to Poirier and he grabbed the BMF title to make big bank at UFC 291. Given the history of both fighters, many expected a five-round war inside the octagon.
Gaethje is especially known for his brawling style and Dustin Poirier loves charging forward despite the damage in his fights. Within the first round itself, both fighters had inflicted decent damage on each other. However, Justin set up a perfect trap and knocked out Poirier with a right head kick in the second round.
A win of this magnitude was bound to receive some high praise. Gaethje was congratulated by many big personalities and he also received a call from former US President Donald Trump. Trump is a huge fan of the fight game and has constantly supported UFC right from its early days. After Trump witnessed the astonishing knockout by Gaethje, he made sure to give credit where it was due and also invited Gaethje for a game of golf whenever he was in town.
“Got a call from Donald Trump that was awesome, He f*cking loves fighting man. He called me and said just how good I did, how proud of me he was, how impressive of a show it was. He also said If I’m ever in New York or Florida hit him up and hopefully we can golf,” revealed Justin Gaethje.
With the BMF title ticked off his list, Gaethje has his eyes set on the undisputed lightweight championship. While The Highlight has stated he wants to take on Islam Makhachev, he is more interested in redeeming his loss to Charles Oliveira.
Justin Gaethje looking forward to redeeming his loss against Charles Oliveira
After his win over Dustin Poirier, Justin Gaethje has cemented himself as the next in line for the lightweight gold. However, Gaethje would have to wait for a while before he gets his hands on the champion Islam Makhachev. Former lightweight champion Charles Oliveira is set to fight Islam this October in Abu Dhabi.
Both fighters will headline the main event of UFC 294, in the same location they fought last time. Oliveira is coming off a dominant win over lightweight contender, Beneil Dariush and is highly looking forward to retaining his title again.
While Gaethje is highly interested in fighting Khabib Nurmagomedov’s protege Islam, he is gunning for a rematch with Charles Oliveira. According to Gaethje, he loved redeeming his loss against Poirier and as such would love to do the same with Charles. He is confident he could beat Charles, given Do Bronx wins the title against Islam.
“In this sport, you don’t get a chance at redemption very often and Oliveira beat me, Makhachev didn’t beat me. I know I could have beat him (Charles Oliveira) and it’s one big regret that I have,” said Gaethje.
With The highlight showing improvements in every fight, a rematch between him and Do Bronx would be interesting to watch. However, for that to happen Charles would have to score a win against Islam Makhachev. Who do you think Justin will fight next? Will it be Charles Oliveira or Islam Makhachev?
