The welterweight division is at a peculiar situation right now considering the number of worthy title contenders the division has. To start things off, we have the BMF, Jorge Masvidal who has bad blood with the champion, Kamaru Usman for a meaningful period. Besides that, former interim champion, Colby Covington can argue for a rematch after the close and entertaining first fight with Usman.
After the dominant win over Tyron Woodley, Gilbert Burns seems to be a strong contender for the title. And with an unbelievable win streak in the division, Leon Edwards can not be overlooked either. However, with all these potential title fights ahead, Jorge Masvidal seems to be the one who is likely to face Kamaru Usman next. But due to negotiation fails, Jorge Masvidal vs Kamaru Usman has not come to fruition yet.
Colby Covington speaks out on welterweight title picture
In a recent interview with ScoreMMA, Colby Covington shared his thoughts on the welterweight title picture. Blasting Jorge Masvidal, Covington said:
“Jorge is not going to fight Usman. For one, he thinks he is a bigger money fight, And two, he is looking for an easier fight.”
While it was expected that Jorge Masvidal would fight for the title next, his recent call out to Nate Diaz and his interest to fight Conor McGregor has made the fans doubt Jorge’s intention to fight Usman. Covington criticized Masvidal for calling out lightweights instead of fighting for the title and said:
“Dan knows deep down inside Jorge Masvidal has no chance to beat Usman let alone if he’s ever gonna show up. That’s why the fight has not happened. Because he is afraid to fight. He is not a real fighter. He is looking to fight lightweight soyboys. He looks so desperate. Every fan in the world has to just see through him, how fake he is and what he really is now. He just exposed his cards that he is afraid to fight. He knows he does not have the heart. He knows he is the quitter inside the octagon.”
Colby Covington has been rallying for the rematch against Kamaru Usman ever since he lost the first encounter. However, Covington is also willing to fight Jorge Masvidal in a grudge fight. It will be intriguing to see how things unfold in the welterweight division in the coming days.
