Will the fans ever see the dream match between Georges St-Pierre and Khabib Nurmagomedov?
After a dominating performance against Justin Gaethje at UFC 254, Khabib Nurmagomedov announced retirement from the sport. Although the decision from Khabib is understandable it is still hard to see a fighter as good as Khabib leaving the sport at his prime.
Abdulamanap Nurmagomedov always wanted Khabib to retire after a record of 30-0. Though Khabib wants to honor his father in every way possible he does not want to continue this journey without his head coach and father. While the MMA community is still stunned by this major news the former UFC welterweight champion, Georges St-Pierre came out to support the lightweight champion.
Georges St-Pierre was highly impressed with Khabib’s win over Gaethje. GSP believes that Khabib had the perfect career and him retiring at the top sets an example for the fighters of coming generations. GSP stated:
“Khabib is invincible now. He is undefeated. It was a perfect career. It was nothing we can say bad about him. It is a perfect career. 29-0 and you retire on the top with the best performance of his career. What do you want more? It was a perfect fight in a perfect career. As close as it gets.”
Georges St-Pierre calls Khabib Nurmagomedov a role model
GSP has always been an advocate of fighters realizing hanging up the gloves before taking unnecessary damage in the fights by competing past their primes. And that’s what he did after defending the welterweight champion for the record time.
GSP retired as arguably the greatest fighter to ever do it. Georges St-Pierre talked about the future of the UFC lightweight champion:
“Now the doors are all open for him. Finish on top. He can do whatever he wants. Sponsorship, publicity, opens a school if he wants, acting, the possibilities are endless. It was just an incredible journey. Khabib has a choice now. He is the perfect role model for the community.”
Going into UFC 254, fans were expecting that Khabib would call out GSP after he beats Gaethje. Khabib even said that he is ready to fight GSP if he comes down to lightweight. But, it seems that the fans will never be able to witness the GSP vs Khabib dream fight.
