“Nobody Needs Colby as Bad as Izzy”- Chael Sonnen Believes Israel Adesanya Should Fight Colby Covington Next

Colby Covington cemented his No. 1 welterweight ranking by dominating his friend turned rival Jorge Masvidal at UFC 272. But with current UFC Welterweight champion Kamaru Usman already holding two recent wins over him, it could be a while before Covington gets a third crack at the title.

But following his victory at UFC 272, Colby Covington also displayed a willingness to go up in the Middleweight division and challenge Israel Adesanya for his middleweight strap. As of now, ‘The Last Stylebender’ has not shown much interest in fighting the former welterweight interim champion.

However, UFC legend Chael Sonnen likes the idea of a Colby Covington vs Israel Adesanya fight. ‘The Bad Guy’ also thinks that Israel Adesanya needs to fight someone who can talk the talk and walk the walk just like him, and that man is Colby Covington.

Israel Adesanya has cleared out most of the middleweight division and although Jared Cannonier appears to be next for the title shot, Chael Sonnen thinks Adesanya should fight Covington next. ‘The Bad Guy’ explained that the fight makes a lot of sense for Adesanya to make at this stage.

Chael Sonnen also points out that ‘The Last Stylebender’ needs Colby Covington at this stage because of the latter’s promotional ability. As of now, ‘Chaos’ is one of the biggest names in the sport, almost entirely thanks to his trash-talking.

I don’t know if Israel is aware of that yet, but he’s starting to fight people that aren’t doing their job in the media, that aren’t bringing the attention, that aren’t helping the brand and making the marquee fight as big as it could be. I think if Izzy stood back and saw what Colby has to offer, that’s gonna be a partner that he would like to do business with.”
