Stephen Thompson Disappointed With UFC for Booking Jorge Masvidal vs Kamaru Usman Rematch

Since the news of the rematch between Kamaru Usman vs Jorge Masvidal broke out, there has been some sort of chaos in the welterweight division. Though many had expected that Usman and Masvidal will run it back one more time, the fact that it’d be so soon has caught many fans off-guard. Nonetheless, this has already become official as per the UFC.

However, there’s one guy who is a bit disappointed with how things have turned out. It is none other than Stephen Thompson who’s been waiting for another shot to the belt. The last he fought for the belt was four years ago. Talking to Submission Radio, he discussed the rematch being booked for UFC 261.

Check out what he’s got to say:

“It was a long shot, you know. there’s a lot of guys ranked above me that are looking for that shot, you know, Colby Covington. A lot of these guys have already faced him.

Of course I was pushing. I’m the only guy that he hadn’t fought. So, I though that would be interesting. But again, I think about it. You know Jorge Masvidal has been in the limelight for a long time. He’s one of the most popular guys in the UFC and the fact that he mentioned if he got the title, he wanna run it back with me.”

Further he wished that Masvidal wins the belt, so that they could have a rematch once again:

“So, I’m not too disappointed. Hopefully, he goes out and gets the W. So that I can face him. And you know, he showed interest in the past, his last fight when he fought Usman. Hopefully he still wants to.”

Kamaru Usman and Jorge Masvidal are set to face each other once again

The last time they fought was in UFC 251 when Masvidal replaced Gilbert Burns on a 6-day notice. The build-up was huge particularly due to the fact that both men didn’t like each other. However, the fight resulted in Usman’s lack-luster victory over Jorge.

Till then, Usman has made yet another successful defense of his title against Burns. As for Masvidal, he’s set to make his comeback against Usman again in UFC 261. It will be very interesting to see if Gamebred manages to claim the belt this time.

Masvidal and Stephen Thompson have met once before

Both men have fought each other once back in 2017. Wonderboy had his hand raised after going three rounds against Masvidal. If Masvidal manages to become the next 170lb champ, a fight against Thompson would not only mean a title defense, but a chance to settle things with him as well.
