Dustin Poirier managed to avenge his 6-year-old defeat against Conor McGregor with a stunning 2nd round KO. He has probably managed to pull one of the biggest upsets in UFC history. The build-up to the fight was quite respectful with McGregor refraining from trash talk. Even though the first round didn’t seem to go according to Poirier’s plan, his investment in calf kicks soon came to fruition in the 2nd round when he managed to corner McGregor and knock him out.
But what grabbed people’s attention the most was the way Notorious handled his loss afterward. During their meeting backstage, Diamond and Notorious had a brief but warm exchange of words. They even agreed for having the 3rd fight between them.
“We’ll do it again”, said McGregor to the victor.

The bout marked the first KO loss of Conor McGregor
With knocking Conor McGregor out, the Louisiana native has managed to create another history in the world of MMA. No one would have thought that the knockout artist would himself get knocked out. Many had speculated Dustin Poirier’s victory coming during the later rounds, but a knock out win this early is just insane.
What’s next for Dustin Poirier and Conor McGregor?
This scintillating victory over such an opponent has put Poirier in the radar for another title shot. But it is yet unclear, if it will be against Khabib Nurmagomedov or for a vacant title. Chances are also that the UFC might even promote Poirier to the lightweight champion just like Robert Whittaker was crowned the champion after Georges St.-Pierre vacated the middleweight belt. As for the Irishman, it is unclear who he will face next. But losing this fight has shut down all the possibilities of a rematch between him and Khabib.
