Ian Garry is now gearing up for a fight against #8 ranked welterweight, Geoff Neal at UFC 298. The two will face off in the welterweight bout on the main card on February 17, 2024. With a win, Ian Garry could secure a ranked spot further up in the welterweight division. Ian Garry recently posted a video of him getting ready for his upcoming fight on Instagram which caught the attention of UFC fans
Ian Garry receives a grappling lesson from Charles Oliveira
In the video, Ian Garry talks about his experience at his new training gym, Chute Boxe Academy in São Paulo, Brazil. At the end of the video, Ian Garry expressed gratitude towards his gymmates before his big fight on February 17. But what’s the most interesting thing is that Ian Garry was seen grappling with the man who’s the reason behind Chute Boxe’s fame, Charles ‘Da Bronx’ Oliveira.

Ian Garry was spar-grappling with the lightweight number-1 contender in the video. Or rather was being literally schooled by Oliveira. The Brazilian UFC legend was teaching Garry a practical lesson in Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu. It was quite alarming to see the ease with which Charles Oliveira was handling Ian Garry’s advances while rolling him over for fun.
This becomes more interesting once you factor in that Ian Garry is a welterweight, while Charles Oliveira is a lightweight, though weight doesn’t matter much in BJJ. In general, Chute Boxe Academy is known for not having mediocre or soft sparring and grappling sessions. And the fact that Garry was struggling just goes to show that it isn’t easy to grapple against ‘Da Bronx’
Why was Garry kicked out of Leon Edwards’ gym?
Ian Garry has had quite an eventful last few months. He has been involved in many controversies leading up to his previous fight and his upcoming fight. One such controversy was surrounding Ian Garry’s last MMA gym. Before training at Chute Boxe, Ian used to train at Leon ‘Rocky’ Edwards‘ gym, Team Renegade BJJ. That was before he was reportedly, ‘refused entrance’ in the gym anymore.

Garry told The Independent that Leon Edwards’ head coach didn’t want the welterweight champ to have any doubts or feel insecure. Following Ian’s statements, the Team Renegade Gym put out a statement addressing Ian’s claims of ‘Insecurity’. The statement said, “Sometimes the coaches allow fighters to come in from the outside, but this is very much a privilege and not the norm.”
It went on to say, “If the coaches feel it’s not adding to the team’s culture, a fighter is refused entrance. Ian Garry’s more nomadic approach to preparation has given him great results, but it’s not in line with what we are creating at Team Renegade. This has nothing to do with one specific fighter or a specific coach.”
Whatever the reason may be, it’s clear that Ian Machado Garry has moved past it. Furthermore, it sure seems as if Garry has settled into the atmosphere of Chute Boxe Academy. As he gears up for his upcoming fight at UFC 298, it remains to be seen how much of Jiu-Jitsu has he learned from Oliveria.
