Kamaru Usman is currently ranked number two in the pound for pound rankings in the UFC. He is also the Welterweight champion in the promotion. Moreover, the Nigerian Nightmare has pretty much defeated the entire division. Since his debut against Hayder Hassan, the Welterweight Champion has defeated Jorge Masvidal, Tyron Woodley, Rafael Dos Anjos, Colby Covington, and many other big names in the company.
The Nigerian will now probably defend his Welterweight Belt against ‘The Chaos’. Colby Covington is the only fighter who has given Kamaru Usman a tough challenge in the octagon. But in the end, Usman knocked him out in the fifth round of the fight. Most experts and fans believe that UFC should officially announce this fight as soon as possible. However, Nate Diaz disagrees with their opinion and has gone to Twitter to express his views. The Stockton Slugger posted a tweet where he criticized Usman for picking an opponent who he has already obliterated.
Kamaru Usman didn’t take Nate Diaz’s words kindly as he responded to him “I see you 209. If you really want this 187 then call your boy hunter.”
As a result, both fighters engaged in a back and forth where Diaz gave a sarcastic reply to Usman’s comments. “You’re doing great champ. I wasn’t trying to disrespect. Have a great fight with one of those poor guys you beat up.”
Nate Diaz last fought against Leon Edwards at UFC 263 where he lost the fight via unanimous decision. In the end, it is quite unlikely that Nate Diaz will get an opportunity for the title unless he beats someone who is at the top of the division.
Stephen Thompson calls for Kamaru Usman next if he defeats Gilbert Burns
If there is anyone who Kamaru Usman has not defeated in the top five rankings in the division then it is Stephen Thompson. As a result, Thompson made this point and called out Usman for a fight three months ago after he defeated Gilbert Burns. However, the Nigerian offered a rematch to Jorge Masvidal and defeated him via knockout at UFC 261.
Therefore Stephen Thompson will now face Gilbert Burns at UFC 264 in the co-main event. In an interview with Submission Radio ‘Wonderboy’ mentions that ” I know that a good win over Gilbert Burns will put me up with those guys.” He also believes that “I’ll be a bad matchup for him”.
In the end, a good win over Gilbert Burns will put him right into the title contention. Moreover, Usman will be more than interested to give him a title shot over Colby Covington or Leon Edwards because he is the only big name that has not defeated by The Nigerian Nightmare in the division yet.
