Colby Covington might be one of the best Welterweights in the history of UFC. But there is hardly any fighter in the UFC who is disliked by his rivals as much as Colby Covington. This is because of the way he acts and behaves outside the octagon. Covington loves to portray himself as a villain during press conferences and interviews. He loves playing that persona in the UFC. As a result, he has an ongoing beef with Dustin Poirier, Kamaru Usman, Jorge Masvidal, and many other fighters in the promotion.
In addition to that one more fighter joins the long list of hating Colby Covington in the UFC. Belal Muhammad in his interview with MMA Junkie expressed his feelings regarding “The Chaos” “I want Colby more than anybody, The hatred I have for that guy is levels above Leon. Of course, I want Leon back just because of the way that one ended, but Colby’s still a level above him.”
“I still don’t understand why Colby’s getting the title fight. Yeah, it was a great fight, but you got your jaw broken and you’ve been sitting on the sidelines ever since that fight.”
“I’ve been calling out Colby since I fought in Australia against Tim Means. “I’ve always wanted to fight Colby Covington. With this last fight showing that I can defend a takedown, it shows people that it will be a great matchup. “It will be a fun matchup to see what happens if Colby can’t get a takedown, what’s he gonna do?”
Does Colby Covington deserve a title shot against Kamaru Usman?
After Dana White confirmed that ‘The Nigerian Nightmare’ will have to defend his Welterweight belt against ‘The Chaos’. Fellow Welterweight contenders Belal Muhammad and Leon Edwards have expressed their opinions towards this decision. Leon Edwards believes that he should be the one getting the title shot ahead of Colby Covington because of the consecutive number of wins that he is racked up whereas Covington has only fought Tyron Woodley and Robbie Lawler since losing to Kamaru Usman at UFC 245.
Belal Muhammad and Leon Edwards have indeed fought more fighters than Colby Covington in these two years. In that case, Vincent Luque and Micheal Chiesa are also worthy contenders because they have won more fights in the last couple of years. But Covington deserves this opportunity because he was the only fighter who had troubled Kamaru Usman in their fight. Moreover, the fans wanted to watch a rematch between Usman and Covington.
In the end, the UFC has made the right decision to give Colby Covington the opportunity for the Welterweight championship. Fans will be thoroughly happy with this decision as they wait for the title rematch.
