Khabib Nurmagomedov is undoubtedly a superstar both inside and outside the octagon. With wins over the likes of Conor McGregor, Dustin Poirier, Rafael dos Anjos and now Justin Gaethje, Nurmagomedov has cemented himself as arguably one of the greatest mixed martial artist of all time.
“Today, I want to say, this was my last fight. No way am I going to come here without my father.”
Soon after his emphatic win over Justin Gaethje at UFC 254, Nurmagomedov bid farewell to the MMA world. While everybody hoped for a 30-0, considering Khabib’s desire to take on the former welterweight king and regarded by many as the greatest mixed martial artist of all time Georges St-Pierre. However, that wasn’t the case. Nurmagomedov rested his gloves in an emotional farewell to all the MMA fans around the globe.
Earlier, The Eagle had requested St-Pierre to come out of retirement to fight him at the lightweight division. Khabib came out and asked him to reconsider so they could fight in an attempt to determine the greatest mixed martial artist of all time. Now that the situation is somewhat reversed, would Georges do the same?
Khabib Nurmagomedov vs Georges St-Pierre is a fight of a lifetime
Speaking about Khabib’s decision to rest his gloves, St Pierre had this to say about the undisputed lightweight champion. “Khabib is invincible now, he is undefeated, it was the perfect career, nothing you can say bad about him. It’s the perfect career. 29-0 and retiring on top with the best performance of his career.” St-Pierre added, “I would never dare to do that. I am not in his shoes, he is going through a tough time because his father passed away. He needs time to mourn his father. I respect Khabib a lot. What we do is a sport. This goes beyond sport, goes on to the human side, and I just wish him and his family — he made a promise — the best. I’m very happy as a fan of Khabib to see the way he finish his career.”
But for UFC fans and Abdulmanap Nurmagomedov (late), it is still a dream match up. St-Pierre with record title defenses at the welterweight division remained undefeated in his own right. Having lost twice, St-Pierre earned stoppage victories over both Matt Serra and Matt Hughes, in redemption to his two sole losses inside the Octagon.
On the other side, Khabib Nurmagoemdov continues to be undefeated and triumphed in the face of adversity despite several setbacks ahead of UFC 254. Khabib looked crisp and went head-on against a solid striker like Justin Gaethje to earn a quick submission win in the first minute of the second round to defend his lightweight gold.
“If he wants to come back and do it, our managers will talk”
Will Khabib make it 30-0 to honor his father? Who is the real G.O.A.T? These questions are yet to be answered. Needless to say, St-Pierre is ready whenever Khabib decides to step back inside the Octagon.
