Los Angeles Angels manager Phil Nevin would not continue further with the team as the team decided not to continue his next-year contract and rather end the one-year contract as he leaves. After being with the Los Angeles Angels for nearly two seasons, with a career record of 119-149 seasons, Nevin parted ways.
The reason why the Angels are firing Nevin is that, under his watch, the club missed the playoff this season and had to rank fourth in the AL West. Nevin started with the Angels before the 2022 campaign as their third base coach, but soon he got promoted as the interim manager after Joe Maddon, who was fired in the middle of the third season, with a losing skid of 14 games.
After that, Nevin got the Angels up to a third-place finish in the AL West. This offered him a deal for one year to work as a manager for the Angels for a full season.
However, Nevin couldn’t work to the best of his potential, even after having star athletes such as Shohei Ohtani and Mike Trout. As a result, this season the team went just 73-89 and skipped the playoffs for a straight ninth campaign. In fact, the team had to call it quits last August and dismiss five players, including Lucas Giolito and Hunter Renfroe.
As Nevin leaves, the Angels become one of the three teams in the MLB without a manager. The next manager for the Angels would have a big task in hand: rebuilding the franchise, maybe with or without Ohtani as well as Trout.
What could this mean for MLB prodigy Shohei Ohtani?
This will be the fourth time in five years that the Los Angeles Angels are hiring a manager, as Phil Nevin’s contract was terminated. This may be part of a very complicated yet well-rounded pitch to keep Shohei Ohtani with the Angels. This could also mean that the Angles are not capable enough to meet the professional ambitions of the two-way superstar Ohtani, as they have become an unstable organization.
Shohei Ohtani signed with the Angels before the 2018 season. Since then…

The Angels’ other big star, Mike Trout, has also demonstrated that he is open to trade in the coming winter if the Angels’ direction remains to displease him. And this change of manager might also not agree with the slugger. Yet it remains to be seen whether Ohtani, who recently cleared out his locker before the regular season and went to Japan, will remain with the Angels or not in the coming future.
