UFC 272 is in the books now and we just witnessed one of the biggest rivalries in UFC get settled inside the octagon. The grudge match between Colby Covington and Jorge Masvidal went to the distance.
And it was Covington who came out victorious by a unanimous decision. Masvidal had his moments in the fight with his striking. But, Covingto’s relentless pressure and wrestling were too much for Gamebred in a 5 round fight.
Colby Covington won every round on the judges’ scorecard. But, there was a moment in round 4, where Masvidal nearly shocked the fans in the arena. After losing the first three rounds, Masvidal was able to secure a knock-down Covington with over one minute remaining in the round.
Colby Covington was hurt but he recovered pretty quickly. On the other hand, Masvidal landed a few more shots after dropping Colby Covington. However, he could not try to finish the fight as he was gassed out after three grueling rounds with Covington.
In the end, it was a comfortable win for Colby Covington, who bounced back from his decision loss to Kamaru Usman. And now, he might get another title shot in the welterweight division depending upon how Chimaev vs Burns and Usman vs Edwards play out.

What is next for Colby Covington and Jorge Masvidal after UFC 272?
Following the fight, Covington called out his former teammate, Dustin Poirier, which is a fun matchup considering Poirier is coming off a loss to Charles Oliveira and looking for exciting fights.
It’s very likely that Dustin Poirier would campaign for a matchup against Nate Diaz instead of a grudge match against Colby Covington. However, the fans would certainly love to see these two former teammates settle their rivalry inside the octagon.
On the other hand, it’s a tough loss for Jorge Masvidal, who is now on a three-fight losing streak. Masvidal has lost to two top of the guys in the division in Usman and Covington. However, his star power has certainly taken a hit after these losses.
there are some exciting matchups for Masvidal in the welterweight division including a rematch against Nate Diaz or a fight against Conor McGregor. However, it’s hard to imagine a scenario where Jorge Masvidal gets back to the top again and fight for the title in the welterweight division.
