German soccer star Mesut Ozil just announced his retirement from the game after a brilliant career that featured a La Liga championship with Real Madrid and the 2014 World Cup with Germany.

Ozil was once asked one of the most vital questions by fans in 2012,"Who do you think is better, Cristiano Ronaldo or Lionel Messi?"

To which he replied, "Messi has proven himself to be one of the best ever in Spain, but Ronaldo was always the best in every country he's played in!"

At Madrid, Ozil and Ronaldo spent three years together, and their contributions to the 2012 league championship under Jose Mourinho were vital.

When asked the same question two years later at an event, he replied, "It was a lot of fun playing with Cristiano Ronaldo, who for me is the best player of all time."

"We both understood each other very well on the pitch, it was perfect. I attended, and he scored. Giving passes to a player who almost never missed was a gift," he said.

"It has been an amazing journey filled with unforgettable moments and emotions," Ozil said at his retirement ceremony.

Ozil, who ended his career in Turkey, was a professional football player for almost 17 years. He was suffering some injuries and thought it was time to leave the big stage of soccer.
