Serena Williams, the iconic tennis legend and global inspiration, has always been open about her personal life and the values that shape her identity. In a recent revelation, Williams shared an aspect of her faith that sheds light on her unconventional approach to celebrating birthdays. As a devoted follower of Jehovah’s Witnesses, Williams has chosen not to observe birthdays, a decision deeply rooted in the beliefs and practices of this religious community.

Jehovah’s Witnesses, a distinct Christian denomination, hold a set of unique beliefs that set them apart from mainstream Christianity. Founded in the late 19th century, Jehovah’s Witnesses base their teachings on a literal interpretation of the Bible. They emphasize a close relationship with God and strive to live their lives in accordance with biblical principles.

One such principle that influences Jehovah’s Witnesses’ approach to birthdays is their understanding of the historical and scriptural significance of such celebrations. While birthdays are widely celebrated and cherished occasions in many cultures around the world, Jehovah’s Witnesses view them through a different lens.

I know they mean well, but should Team USA, et al be tweeting birthday greetings to Serena Williams given that she’s a Jehovah’s Witness?

“Olympia doesn’t celebrate birthdays. We’re Jehovah’s Witnesses, so we don’t do that.” Speaking about Olympia Ohanian, the daughter of Serena, she said that she will not celebrate her birthday as well due to the fact that she is also a Jehovah’s Witness.

Why doesn’t Serena Williams celebrate her birthday?

Jehovah’s Witnesses abstain from celebrating birthdays due to several key factors derived from their interpretation of biblical teachings. Firstly, they highlight the absence of any explicit scriptural command to commemorate birthdays, coupled with the limited biblical references to such events. In the Bible, birthdays are mentioned only a few times, and these references are often associated with negative or problematic events.

Additionally, Jehovah’s Witnesses emphasize the origins of birthday celebrations, tracing them back to ancient pagan customs and rituals. They believe that such practices are not in harmony with their understanding of true worship and the pure worship of God. That is the reason why Serena Williams doesn’t celebrate her birthday.

Furthermore, Jehovah’s Witnesses strive to maintain a focus on spiritual matters throughout the year, rather than dedicating specific days to personal celebrations. They prioritize spiritual growth, communal worship, and evangelistic activities, considering these pursuits to be more significant in their faith.

As a devoted follower of the Jehovah’s Witness faith, Serena Williams has adopted the community’s stance on birthdays for both herself and her daughter. Instead of traditional birthday celebrations, she channels her energy into cultivating a deep spiritual connection with her family and community, prioritizing their shared beliefs and values.

Williams’ decision to abstain from birthday celebrations reflects her commitment to her faith and the unique lifestyle she has chosen to embrace. By adhering to the principles and practices of Jehovah’s Witnesses, she finds solace, strength, and a sense of purpose in her everyday life, both on and off the tennis court. Thus, Serena Williams’ revelation regarding her choice to forgo birthday celebrations offers a glimpse into the beliefs and practices of Jehovah’s Witnesses.
