Gervonta Davis has been one of the interesting prospects to watch. Under the guidance of the great Floyd Mayweather, Davis has gone on to accomplish some great things. However, for one reason or another the duo is not working together any longer.
For the most part, Floyd has promoted Gervonta for the majority of the latter’s career. Following his retirement from the sport, the former five-divisional world champion began focusing on his promotional company known as Mayweather Promotions. Notably, Davis would go on to become the biggest name under their banner before eventually parting ways last year.
Thus, Mayweather and Davis have worked together for a long time. Previously, following his win over fellow Mayweather Promotions fighter Rolando Romero, Davis chose to quit the organization. Whilst there have been numerous rumors and speculations on the matter, many stated that Davis had simply completed his contract with the promotion. However, in the months that followed, it appeared as though their break was anything but amicable.
Why did Gervonta Davis leave Floyd Mayweather?
Whilst a lot was made of Davis not continuing to work with Floyd, many wondered about what could be the reason behind it. According to many, Davis chose to part ways in order to secure himself a bigger payday and get out of Mayweather’s ‘shadow’. Thus, coming into his fight against Hector Luis Garcia, Davis chose to work with promoter Al Haymon instead.
Whilst Floyd was all for “Tank” going his own way and being his own boss, there may have been tension brewing behind the scenes. Ahead of his fight against Ryan Garcia, Davis was reportedly banned from using Mayweather’s gym to train. In a since-deleted tweet, Davis reacted saying, “What? That Floyd’s petty a** said I couldn’t use his gym anymore. I don’t give a f***! Nah, it’s not what I heard, it’s what I know, chump!”
As such, there were rumors that “Tank” and Floyd were ‘beefing’. However, these rumors were put to bed after Davis and Mayweather linked up at the David Benavidez vs Caleb Plant fight. Moreover, Mayweather Promotions CEO Leonard Ellerbe further confirmed that the two were on good terms once again.
Floyd is still supportive of Tank Davis
Floyd is very keen to watch Davis dominate his fight against Ryan Garcia. Ahead of the fight, Floyd has predicted that “when he (Davis) hit that boy, he (Garcia) ain’t gonna wake up until next year”. Further, Floyd added that he has been working behind the scenes with Davis to get him in the best shape of his life.
Additionally, Mayweather Promotions CEO Leonard Ellerbe, who is assisting Davis’s team in promoting the fight, dropped a bombshell as well. Reportedly, their team has sent spies into Ryan Garcia’s camp and is aware of his strategy coming into the fight. Quoting that it’s the ‘art of war,’ Ellerbe has predicted that Tank will finish the fight early and by KO.
Whilst Garcia backs himself despite the spies and the ‘Judases’, it will be a thrilling watch to see who comes out on top when the two go head to head on April 22 at the T-Mobile Arena. Who do you think wins this one? Will Floyd’s guidance help Davis win this one? Do you think sending spies has put Gervonta Davis in a favorable position? Leave your thoughts in the comments below.
