The WWE Universe has seen many top names enter and exit the promotion in the past few decades. One name that caused a lot of murmurs among the audience was Alberto Del Rio. Born as José Alberto Rodríguez Chucuan, he established his name in the professional wrestling industry mostly for his run in WWE.
However, his run at the Stamford-based promotion was short-lived. Starting his run in the late 2000s, he was compelled to bid goodbye to the promotion in 2014. Being a three-time WWE Champion, his exit came sooner than anyone would have expected. He was fired from the company “due to unprofessional conduct and an altercation with an employee,” as claimed by WWE.
The company and the star kept their mouths shut on the actual scene that took place. However, Dave Meltzer revealed the truth behind the massive step taken by the management. “Somebody asked [Web producer] to clean off his plate. The person joked something along the lines of how that’s Del Rio’s job,” he revealed.
A racist comment, Alberto Del Rio did not take kindly to his words and went ahead to confront him. “As the story goes, he didn’t apologize and then smiled at him, and Del Rio slapped him,” added Dave Meltzer. Later, it was revealed that the guy was none other than Cody Barbierri when Del Rio discussed his firing in an interview.
Alberto Del Rio was accused of sexually assaulting his girlfriend
Del Rio’s violent behaviour was not restricted to the ring but seemingly extended beyond it. On May 9, 2020, Del Rio was arrested for sexual assault felony charges after his girlfriend’s allegations. NBC News 4 San Antonio explained the horrific story as narrated by the victim.
It was reported that Alberto Del Rio suspected the lady of infidelity. After she refused to accept the same, “he slapped her across the head, slapped her again, then took her to his downstairs bedroom and slapped her eight more times.” She was then forced to put on a dress and dance for him.
Her refusal reportedly angered the former WWE star all the more and he threatened to drop her son in the middle of the road somewhere. He did not stop here and “tied the woman’s hands with boxing straps, put a sock in her mouth and sexually assaulted her for several hours, using various objects.” However, a year later, in 2021, the charges were dismissed after a witness did not appear at the court for the proceedings of the case.
Saraya fka Paige had been engaged to Alberto Del Rio
One of the most talked-about WWE relationships revolved around the former WWE stars Alberto Del Rio and Saraya fka Paige. The two started dating in 2016, while Del Rio was not officially divorced from his former wife, Angela Velkei. Later, the same year, Paige went down on her knees and proposed to her love, who acknowledged her proposal with a yes.
However, the two confirmed their split in 2017. Initially, Alberto Del Rio claimed that the couple split mutually after not being able to meet frequently. “We decided to do this because it’s the best for our careers and my kids,” he told Konnan on his podcast. However, soon, Paige and Alberto Del Rio started taking shots at each other.
The two went quite personally into each other’s lives. Neither of the two held themselves back from accusing the other of domestic violence. It took a long time for the two to put an end to their past. Looking at them now, they have moved on in their personal lives as well as their professional wrestling careers.
