Fans would surely be excited for the official singles comeback of Serena Williams on a WTA match after a year worth of a break due to an injury picked up by her in the opening round of the Wimbledon 2021.
Serena has missed around 3 Grand Slam titles in a row and she surely would hope to make a strong comeback at the Wimbledon.
Her preparations for Wimbledon had started by participating in the Eastbourne International tournament in the doubles category but unfortunately had to withdraw in the semifinals after her Ons Jabeur her partner suffered an unfortunate knee injury.
Serena’s rankings have plummeted to the 1200s due to her inactivity. For this year’s Wimbledon event, Serena Williams has been granted a wildcard entry directly to the main draw.
She would be looking forward to competing at her best levels and trying and equal Martina Navratilova’s record of 9 grand slam titles.
Her winning the title at the Wimbledon would mean that she would also equal the record set by Margaret Court of 25 Majors. Now all that stands between Serena and her title are the seven matches which she has to win.
Predicted finals run for Serena Williams
In a hypothetical scenario let us consider that Serena would be playing at her best, let us look at how her fixtures would fare if she manages to win each fixture from the Round 1 to the semifinals.
Serena’s first-round opponent has been announced and she faces a relatively easy fixture in the form of the Frenchwoman Harmony Tan who is playing in the Wimbledon for the first time.
Serena would mostly be facing Sara Sorribes Tormo in the second round, and it would be expected for Serena to win this fixture considering that Sara isn’t that strong on a grass surface. The third round is when things get interesting since she would be facing last year’s runner-up Karolina Pliskova.
However, Serena can capitalise on the fact that Karoline has been very inconsistent in this year’s grass season and won the draw. If she makes it to the fourth round she would be facing Coco Gauff or Amanda Anisimova both of whom are excellent new-generation tennis players.
Serena would be facing Simona Halep in the quarterfinals, and this surely would be difficult for Serena since Simona had won the 2019 edition of the Wimbledon by defeating Williams itself. Finally comes the most awaited clash of the year.
Iga Swiatek would face Serena Williams in the semifinals if everything goes as expected. Iga has been unstoppable and Serena has her experience and titles to back her.
Serena can possibly capitalise on the fact that Iga has no preparation on the grass surface. If somehow Serena manages to scrap a win against Iga Swiatek, she would be facing her Eastbourne International partner Ons Jabeur in the finals of the Wimbledon 2022.
