Round one of the Wimbledon Championships can be defined in one word – Upset. Things have not panned out for a lot of stars as one would have expected them to.
The grass surface is quite a bit unpredictable and it seems that the top tennis stars are finding it difficult to tame.
The biggest upset of Day 2 was when the French debutant, Harmony Tan broke the hearts of thousands of fans after she defeated Serena Williams in the opener round. It surely would be a huge moment for Tan and she also accepted that she was fairly surprised.
The match lasted for over three hours and it surely kept the audience on the edge of their seat. In the post-match conference when Serena was asked about her future plans pertaining to her retirement, she clearly stated that she is not in the position to answer that question.
Rafael Nadal and Stefanos Tsitsipas Scrap a Victory in Round 1 of Wimbledon
Rafael Nadal would surely be looking to extend his current 22 Grand Slam records by clinching the title at the Wimbledon. However, he came close to being eliminated in the first round itself against the debutant Francisco Cerundolo.
The duo had to fight it out for more than three and half hours in order to get the results of the match. Finally, Nadal managed to progress by winning 6-4, 6-3, 3-6, 6-4 in the first round action. We need to consider that this is the first time since 2019 that Nadal is playing in the Wimbledon.
He also has zero practice since he has not played any warm-up matches on the grass. Nadal and his fans had probably expected to get an easy straight-set victory, however, things didn’t pan out his way. Another player who could not find his groove early on was Stefanos Tsitsipas while playing against Alexander Ritschard.
Only the resilience displayed by Stefanos gave him a bit of a wiggle room to win the encounter. Tsitsipas seemed good enough in the first two sets, but third set onwards, his opponent almost staged a commendable comeback.
