The Wimbledon points saga is currently ongoing with the ATP and the WTA deciding to scrap all the ranking points for the tournament in retaliation to the tournament banning Russian and Belarusian players.
Naomi Osaka had previously stated that she may not participate in the grass-court Wimbledon Grand Slam since it is more of an exhibition rather than a Grand Slam title due to the lack of points.
The 2021 ranking points were also scrapped from the tournament and as a result of this players such as Roger Federer and Serena Williams would be losing their ranks even if they do not play at the upcoming Wimbledon.
As a result of all this Naomi further clarified that she clearly leans towards not playing the Wimbledon, due to the ongoing circumstances.
Andy Murray considers Wimbledon to be a great tournament irrespective of the ranking points
After the comments made by Naomi Osaka, former World No 1 Andy Murray responded on Twitter by stating that,
“I’d hazard a guess that most people watching on centre court at Wimbledon in a few weeks’ time wouldn’t know or care about how many ranking points a player gets for winning a 3rd round match.”
But I guarantee they will remember who wins. Wimbledon will never be an exhibition and will never feel like an exhibition. The end.”
He compared the current situation of Wimbledon with that of golf. He stated that he follows golf very closely and he has no idea of how many ranking points the winner of a golf masters gets.
Murray also compared the situation with that of the FIFA world cup. He said that he and his friends enjoy watching the FIFA world cup and they don’t know or even care how many ranking points a team would get for winning the FIFA world cup.
But irrespective of all this he can say who won the world cup or the masters. Andy Murray is currently ranked 67 on the ATP Rankings and he has not officially announced his return to compete in the Wimbledon, but it is expected that he will be playing in the tournament.
Last year he ended his Wimbledon run with a third-round exit.
