WWE legend John Cena suffers defeat in his return to the WWE ring at WrestleMania 39. The veteran superstar who faced Austin Theory for the United States Championship lost controversially due to a refereeing mistake. The result also ruined John Cena’s quest to win the coveted United States Championship in the final stages of his WWE career.
As announced earlier, the match opened the 2023 edition of the Showcase of the Immortals. The evenly poised contest started with both stars getting their offense in. Referee Chad Patton accidentally getting knocked out was the match’s turning point.
Cena was able to make the Champion tap out, but the WWE official missed the spot. Theory then took advantage and hit a low blow in typical heel fashion. A final A-Town down sealed the deal for the 25-year-old star as he registered the biggest win of his WWE career.
