Last night was the 56th Super Bowl event. The Los Angeles Rams took on the Cincinnati Bengals. One of the most anticipated and talked about segments during the event is the ‘Half-Time Show‘. The half-time show was filled with hip-hop legends like Snoop Dogg, Dr. Dre, Kendrick Lamar, Eminem and 50 Cent. WWE put out a tweet during the show. They compared John Cena to the half-time show performers. This brought a lot of backlash from fans forcing them to delete the tweet.
John Cena – the Doctor of Thuganomics
Early on during John Cena’s WWE career, his character was not moving anywhere. Cena was ‘just another guy‘ on the roster. He was in line to be fired next. That all changed during a plane ride. Cena was travelling with the roster for a show and he performed a freestyle to entertain the passengers. Stephanie McMahon was also part of the trip and she was impressed by Cena’s rapping skills. She suggested that Cena should implement this skill into his gimmick. This suggestion saved Cena’s career. His freestyle gimmick lead him to become US Champion and was also one of the stepping stones for him to become a 16-time WWE Champion.
Cena also had a bunch of rap battles. He’s had battles against superstars like Kurt Angle, the Big Show and the Rock.
Cena has also made a couple of rap albums. Some of the noteworthy rap songs are “Bad, Bad, Man” and ‘Keep Frontin’“.
The deleted Tweet
During the half-time show, WWE thought it was a great idea to mention John Cena and add a clip of his music video. WWE was trying to merge hip-hop with WWE. As mentioned earlier the people performing at the Super Bowl half-time show were Eminem, 50 Cent, Kendrick Lamar and Snoop Dogg.
The fans took offence to this. One of the reasons for the backlash was Cena being compared to all-time greats like Snoop Dogg. The other was for WWE ignoring an actual rapper in Ron Killings, popularly known as R-Truth.
Did WWE tweet and delete trying to compare John Cena to the absolute legends from the #SuperBowl halftime show?!? pic.twitter.com/GW8imBaXUA

Obviously, WWE thought they could be part of the conversation by mentioning one of the wrestling legends. Unfortunately, the heavy backlash they received forced them to delete the tweet. On the positive side of things, WWE did get a lot of recognition during the Super Bowl, thanks to an electrifying introduction by the Rock.
