It appears from a commercial that plays throughout videos on WWE’s YouTube channel that the first-ever “Pitch Black match” would take place at the Royal Rumble pay-per-view next month. The commercial promotes Mtn Dew’s Pitch Black flavor, which will be back in shops in January.
The match is likely to include Bray Wyatt, who hasn’t competed in a WWE ring after his comeback in October, according to the initial report. For the past two months, Wyatt has been at differences with LA Knight.
As previously reported by WrestlingNewsCo in December, Edge and Finn Balor will face off in a Hell in a Cell match at the Royal Rumble on January 28th in San Antonio.
Last month, WrestlingNews.co reported that “We were told about a pitch that was made for a ‘Pitch Black’ match and it was being seriously considered for the show. The source did not have any more details on the structure/rules of the match but one source in the company believes that the match is for Bray Wyatt.”, the report said.
The origin of Pitch Black Match in WWE
WWE ran a promo for a “Pitch Black Match” during Monday night’s “Best of 2022” episode of RAW, and although no additional information was provided about the match, both Bray Wyatt & Edge were featured in the advertisement.
The Royal Rumble PLE, which takes place next month, may feature more novelty matchups than just the two battle royales that give the event its name. However, the observant users of the Wrestle Ops Twitter handle spotted that WWE had been running a brief YouTube advertisement for the match.

There is no word about the stipulations of the match or its participants. However, the font used in the video has little resemblance to the one WWE displays on TV for Wyatt-related topics. This and an earlier report that Bray will compete in the match appear to be the reason behind WrestleOps’ prediction.
With Wyatt, Triple H has chosen to gradually develop him by keeping him away from the ring and emphasizing promos and character development. Wyatt appears to be marketed as a draw who only performs at big events.
