Hollywood‘s film and TV production is effectively going to shut down after the Screen Actors Guild and the American Federation of Television and Radio Artists announced their strike on Wednesday, July 12th. The union will join the Writers Guild of America for their first double strike since 1960.
The SAG-AFTRA strike started after the disintegration of contract negotiations with companies such as Disney, Netflix, Warner Bros., and Amazon. The Alliance of Motion Picture and Television Producers was the bargaining group for the major studios.
After the negotiations disintegrated between the two parties, SAG-AFTRA President Fran Drescher addressed a press conference. She said, “You cannot keep being dwindled, marginalized, disrespected, and dishonored. The entire business model has been changed by streaming, digital, and AI.”
“If we don’t stand tall right now, we are going to be in trouble. We are all going to be in jeopardy of being replaced by machines and big business; who cares more about Wall Street than you and your family?” Fran added.
The SAG-AFTRA strike will halt the majority of Hollywood, and wrestler-turned-actors Dwayne Johnson, John Cena, and Dave Bautista will face the same. A SAG-AFTRA strike means that actors cannot promote new films; thus, the strike will surely affect everyone, including Dwayne, John, and Dave.
