On paper, it looks like Katsuki Kitano has been cast in an unenviable role at this weekend’s ONE 167: Tawanchai vs. Nattawut II on Prime Video, but the Japanese rising star doesn’t see it that way. “Bong” will serve as the first opponent of British Muay Thai legend Liam Harrison’s retirement tour, which begins with a bantamweight Muay Thai contest at the Impact Arena in Bangkok, Thailand, on June 7.
Liam Harrison is a pioneer of western Muay Thai, with three World Titles to his name across a storied 117-fight career to date. The 38-year-old has suggested that the 2024 campaign will be his last as a professional fighter.
Precious few fighters manage to leave the sport on top, and Kitano is planning to spoil “The Hitman’s” party and use his opponent’s name as a springboard for his own career. “Since he’s a big name, if I can beat him, this is a great opportunity. I’ve known about him for a long time, and I saw my senior Yamato Tetsuya fight him before, so when I got the offer, I thought, ‘Wow, it’s my turn now.’ I decided I’d go for it wholeheartedly,” he said.
“He’s a big name, so it really motivates me.” And he has a plan to get the job done.
Katsuki Kitano sends a warning to Liam Harrison
Katsuki Kitano has warned Liam Harrison not to look past him when the pair clash at ONE 167. The 28-year-old is certainly no pushover. He has a well-rounded Muay Thai arsenal of his own, which he has demonstrated in his 25 professional victories to date.
“I think my kicking game is an advantage since I’ve been doing Muay Thai for so long. I’m younger, so I have the stamina advantage if I train properly. I’m making sure his longer career doesn’t let him make up for that,” he said.
“I have to get the KO. That will really put my name out there. I’m going for the knockout. I want to show the world the strength of Japanese fighters.” Kitano said.
The Japanese fighter made his debut under the ONE banner this past October, an impressive unanimous decision victory over Turkey’s Halil Kutukcu. Needless to say, he will look to make a statement this weekend at ONE 167 as he takes on a veteran like Liam Harrison. With a victory over the British Great, it’s safe to say he can find himself right near the title picture just after his second fight for the ONE banner.
