Carlos Alcaraz has been stealing the spotlight since reaching Melbourne. Prior to this season’s Australian Open, he did not play in any warmup events. Alcaraz last played at the Nitto ATP Finals in November last year. After his fourth-round match at Melbourne, Alcaraz was quizzed about his off-court life by Jim Courier. The fans found a hilarious moment during the interview.
The Spaniard was asked about watching the game as a spectator. Alcaraz said that he does watch the game, especially Daniil Medvedev, Novak Djokovic, and Jannik Sinner. Courier then asked about the WTA tour; Alcaraz said, “I watch WTA as well, When I can obviously. When I turn the TV on, If it’s WTA, ATP, whatever, I like to watch.” The crowd laughed as he could not take names from the WTA tour.

Fans began comparing Alcaraz to Camila Giorgi. She had reached the quarterfinals of a grand slam for the first time at Wimbledon in 2018. After her fourth-round win, she was asked about her opponent, Serena Williams. Giorgi said, “I don’t follow tennis, women’s tennis, and I don’t follow tennis.” She did not speak about playing Serena in a quarterfinal match.
Carlos Alcaraz continues record-breaking run at Melbourne
Alcaraz is playing at the Australian Open for the third time in his career. He had withdrawn last year due to an injury in his right leg. He reached the third round in 2022 and made his debut in 2021 while losing in the second round. This year, No.2 reached the quarterfinals for the first time. Alcaraz has now reached the quarterfinal stages at all the slams.
The 20-year-old has only dropped a single set in his first four matches at Melbourne. Alcaraz was on fire in his fourth-round clash against Miomir Kecmanovic. The Serbian could not rally for a single breakpoint in the match and got bageled in the final set. Kecmanovic hit 14 winners as compared to 43 winners by Alcaraz in a match that lasted for an hour and 43 minutes.
It was by far the shortest completed match for Alcaraz in the event. In the third round, Juncheng Shang withdrew in the third set after an hour into the match. The two-time Grand Slam winner will now face Alexander Zverev in the quarterfinals. Zverev has had four wins in seven matches against Alcaraz and lost to him in the quarterfinals of the US Open last year.
